High Cholesterol (Hyperlipidaemia)

Last year I started suffering cramps in my left leg while walking. I visited my GP who took some blood to test. All the results were OK except my cholesterol was quite high at 6.9. It was suggested I went on a diet, but no diet given, and to join a gym. As I am retired I knew the gym was not for me. I went on what I thought was a healthy diet, lots of fruit and veg, porridge for breakfast, spreads and yoghurts “proved to lower cholesterol”. On this diet I suffered chronic indigestion and diarrhoea. After 3 months I had another cholesterol check and to my dismay the result was up to 7. My GP suggested I take tablets which would reduce my cholesterol but I would have to take these for the rest of my life. I thought there must be an alternative, so made an appointment and went to see Sean. He felt my pulse in both arms, looked at my tongue and asked lots of questions. He asked me to fill in a diet sheet of everything I ate in a week. After a session of acupuncture I felt positive this would work for me. At my next appointment Sean looked at my “healthy” diet and crossed out 50% and gave me a diet sheet especially for me, lots of rice, chicken, fish, beans and pulses, no raw veg or citrus fruit but cooked root veg. He also gave me some herbs which I took religiously. I also went to Sean’s Qigong lessons and practised most days. The indigestion went and the diarrhoea cleared. I had another cholesterol test result of 5 – brilliant! I occasionally have a bit of steak but now I eat to live not live to eat.

Unspecified Condition

(Permissions: initials only)

I have no real knowledge of how acupuncture can possibly work. However, having experienced the benefits of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine over the last few months, I simply know that it does!

Without going into too much detail about my medical condition, I can truthfully say that I am a much healthier well-balanced person than I was on my first visit.

Sean and his team are very professional, understanding and genuinely care about their patients. I would therefore be more than happy and confident to recommend [The Sean Barkes Clinic] to my friends and family.

Cardiac Arrhythmia

(Permissions: initials only)

I have suffered with cardiac arrhythmia for over five years. My doctor’s answer was to treat the symptoms with a drug but after a while my body conditioned itself to that as it eventually would to any drug, so an alternative was then recommended (with a different set of side effects). I realised that this process was not an effective answer and set out to educate myself about other available therapies.  I became aware of the importance of mineral imbalances to health and the need to make time for periods of proper relaxation.  Sean gave me extensive advice on diet and lifestyle and also provided suitable Chinese herbs.

I have now gone for my longest spell in over five years without an episode of heart palpitations and genuinely feel that I am now controlling the problem at its’ source and will ultimately become symptom free. I would recommend this holistic approach to everyone. Many thanks to Sean for the vital part he has played in this process.

I always wanted to receive Acupuncture. As a complementary therapist I was open to the benefits. However, I was told many years ago by a Physiotherapist that as I suffered from Epilepsy (even though seizure free for years) I could not receive this as I was contraindicated. I was very disappointed but since July 2007 this has all changed. I had been off work for sometime and even attended emergency A&E, with the effects of acute sinusitis. This was the first bout of the condition but despite a tremendous amount of pain killers, antibiotics and sprays nothing was helping to relieve the symptoms and I knew I needed to try an alternative. Hopi Ear Candling helped to clear my ears but I decided to book an appointment with Sean, who reassured me that having epilepsy would not prevent me from having treatments.

At my initial treatment Sean went through an extensive consultation with me and got to the heart of my deficiencies – quite an eye opener!! I was advised that I needed a course of 10 treatments and so I embarked! Gradually I had less crushing pain in my face and felt many of the symptoms subside. I felt more relaxed in myself and the fantastic effect was that I felt more energised and less sluggish. Other conditions also improved as well so I felt an all round improvement.

Sean guided me through my course with aftercare advice, dietary information, and relaxation techniques. His quirky humour made sessions much lighter and enjoyable, particularly when I strongly felt the Chi working, once the needle had been positioned. Sean is someone you feel comfortable with and who very quickly works to resolve the imbalances.

The benefits of my treatment with Sean enabled me to go back to work, after having a month on sick leave and fitter than I was before I suffered from sinus problems. It was nice to be able to walk my retired greyhound and have the energy to do so. People commented that they had noticed the pained expression in my face had lifted and that I looked so much better. I felt amazingly well.

I know now that I would not hesitate to use acupuncture again and recommend Sean to my friends and family. In addition the reception staff and cleaner at the practice are lovely and welcoming. That makes a big difference.

Molluscum Contagiosum

My son (4 years old) was suffering with an unpleasant skin infection; Molluscum Contagiosum. After 2 months of visits to the GP and numerous antibiotics the spots did not improve. His torso and arms were covered in red, inflamed itchy lesions. Not only were they infected but he had developed an eczema-type reaction around the Mollusca.

After 2 sessions of acupuncture and some cream which looked like mud (my son loved it!) his spots started to fade and after the 3rd session they had gone .Two weeks on there are only faint red marks left where the spots were. But they have definitely gone!! He looks fantastic!

I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and was experiencing symptoms like irritability, restlessness, insomnia, poor energy, erratic and irregular heartbeat.  For a long period of time I also suffered with anxiety and panic attacks.  It was not long before I found myself taking 8 tablets per day (inclusive of the contraceptive pill).  I decided it was time to take some action – I was on a ‘self help’ mission.  Fortunately for me, I got in touch with the Sean Barkes Clinic [Clinic of Traditional Chinese Medicine]. It was immediately apparent that I had found that much needed help.  Not only have I been treated in the form of acupuncture, I have experienced Chinese Massage and Chinese Herbal Medicine.  It is without doubt that due to this treatment I feel the best I have felt in years, my thyroid is functioning normally, I am tablet free, and have gained massive amounts of knowledge about my body.

After a root canal procedure at the dentist, I began to experience pain in the left side of my face, radiating to my left temple and through my eye. I had Xrays at the hospital, and a consultation with the Maxillo-facial specialist, who proceeded to remove the tooth, as the filling was projecting into the bone of my upper jaw.

The pain did not subside, and over a period of some months increased to a point where Ibuprofen was no longer sufficient pain relief, and a constant nagging pain persisted.

Due to the Dr. telling me that there was nothing else that could be done…I needed to seek help from elsewhere. At my partner’s suggestion I sought a consultation with an acupuncturist…I knew nothing about acupuncture save that it involved needles.

My first consultation involved a lengthy history taking of sometimes apparently unrelated personal matters, and an initial treatment. I was put at ease from the start, and whilst remaining sceptical, and a little apprehensive, I had come to ‘lose the pain’. I rested for the required time in a treatment room, full of needles which I hardly felt after they had hit the spot on insertion. The pain in my face and headache were much improved by the time I reached home, but I did have a pain in my foot!

Subsequent visits have enabled me to reduce the amount of Ibuprofen, to at times less than half the (maximum) dose that I had been taking.

I am still not free of the pain completely, but my sleep and personal life are already feeling the benefit, and the treatment sessions are getting further apart.
